Headshot Percentage: What Is Good, and Why Chasing It Backfires
Headshot percentage is the stat players brag about and the stat that misleads them most. It is worth tracking. It is not worth optimising.
What HS% actually counts
Headshot percentage is headshots divided by total shots that hit a body — head, body and legs. Shots that miss entirely do not enter the calculation at all.
That last detail is the source of most confusion. HS% is not "how accurate am I." It is "when I hit something, how often was it the head." A player who fires 200 bullets, misses 180, and lands 20 — 12 of them headshots — posts a 60% headshot rate. Their aim is not good. Their sample is tiny.
A Marshal player who takes three careful shots a round and an Odin player who sprays 60 bullets can post the same headshot percentage while playing completely different games. Always read HS% next to your ADR and total kills.
What is a good headshot percentage
The genuinely useful benchmark is narrower than people think, because the top of the ladder is not that far from the middle:

Note how compressed that is. The gap between a decent Gold player and a professional is roughly ten percentage points. Headshot rate is a real skill signal, but it is not where the bulk of the skill gap lives — that is in decision-making, utility use and timing.
The three ways players inflate HS% while getting worse
1. Switching to a one-tap-only playstyle
Refusing to spray, refusing to take mid-range fights, and only taking clean one-tap angles will lift your headshot percentage immediately. It will also drop your damage, your kill count and your round impact. If your HS% jumped five points and your ADR fell twenty, you did not improve — you got more passive.
2. Playing only Sheriff and Guardian
High-damage, low-fire-rate weapons produce far fewer body-shot hits per engagement, which mechanically raises the percentage. The Sheriff in particular is a headshot-rate inflator. Fine as a training constraint, misleading as a metric.
3. Refusing to shoot at range
Long-range spray is where headshot percentage goes to die, and also where a lot of legitimate round-winning damage comes from. Declining every 40-metre fight makes your stat line prettier and your team weaker.
If a change raises your headshot percentage but lowers your ADR and your KAST, it made you worse. HS% is only meaningful when the other two hold steady or rise with it.
The one thing that actually moves it
Crosshair placement. Not flick training, not sensitivity tuning, not a new mouse. Crosshair placement.
Headshot percentage is largely determined before the fight starts. If your crosshair is already at head height, already on the angle you are about to clear, and already pre-aimed at the pixel the enemy will appear on, you do not need to aim — you need to click. If your crosshair is at chest height and pointed at the floor, every fight begins with a correction, and corrections land in the body.
Three placement habits worth drilling
- Head height, always. Walk around a custom game and consciously keep your crosshair on the line where a standing player's head would be. It feels unnatural for about two hours and then becomes automatic.
- Pre-aim the corner, not the open space. Point at the exact edge an enemy must round, roughly one character-width off the wall. Aiming at the middle of a doorway means every peek requires a flick.
- Reset after every clear. After you check an angle, bring the crosshair back to head height on the next angle rather than letting it drift down while you move.
Ten minutes of deliberate placement work is worth more than an hour of flick drills for this particular stat. The aim warmup routine builds placement into the session rather than treating it as separate.
Crosshair size matters more than you think
A large, thick crosshair hides the exact pixel you are aiming at. Players using oversized crosshairs consistently place lower on the head because the centre of the crosshair is ambiguous.
